Life's a beech!

In honour of Earth Day, we are celebrating our two beautiful copper beech trees in the quadrangle of OUP’s headquarters in Oxford. The second tree was planted in 1978 using a cutting taken from the original and was placed adjacent to it as part of a series of events to commemorate the quincentenary (500th anniversary) of printing at Oxford.

As noted from the account in the Press’s staff magazine The Record in December 1978, the new tree was intended to take over from the first ‘in a hundred years or so’. We are almost half way there and, as can be seen from the current photo, both new and old tree are doing well!
